Your comprehensive tour of Vancouver may also include the city’s renowned neighbourhoods: Yaletown, hopping with trendy shops housed in old and modern buildings; Chinatown, visit the Dr. Sun Yat Sen Chinese Gardens, wander through the Chinese shops in the marketplace and if time allows a quick stop for a tea sampling at the Ten Ren Chinese tea shop; in Gastown, Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhood, hear all about the founder Gassy Jack and gain insight into how Vancouver became the major trading port it is today; see Vancouver’s elegant residential area, with some of the city’s oldest mansions in Shaughnessy, a neighbourhood which was created in 1907 by the Canadian Pacific Railway; then wrap up your day at the Granville Island Public Market, a fascinating assortment of colourful stalls, showcasing unique homemade products and the very finest in gastronomic delights.

For the adventurous traveller visit: Grouse Mountain, which boasts stunning views of Vancouver, the Tantalus Mountain range and the Fraser Valley from atop the “Eye in the Sky”, the only wind turbine in the world with a viewing platform, lumberjack show, a swiss-style gondola and a ten acre outdoor enclosure for bear viewing; take a walk through old-growth forest at Capilano River Regional Park and visit the fish hatchery and famous Capilano Suspension Bridge; and the UBC Museum of Anthropology, renowned for its displays of world arts and cultures, including  major displays of the numerous First Nation bands from the Pacific Northwest.

We had a great day with Mike Lawrence. We were visiting Vancouver in our RV and on this trip we were staying at the Burnaby Cariboo RV park, which is outside of Vancouver proper. No problem, Mike was here promptly at 9:15 AM to pick us up for our tour. Mike drives a nice newer Mercedes Sprinter Van that has room for 12. On this day, we would only have one other traveller, Anne – a retired school principal from Melbourne, Australia. So, it was like we had our own private tour. Mike was a very interesting guy with deep roots here in British Columbia. He has managed a wide variety of tours – including wine country tours, fishing tours, outdoor / adventure tours. He is also a modern renaissance man with education in forestry, art, cooking and teaching. Our tour lasted 5 hours and it included both driving to various sites around the city where he would park and guide us on foot. It covered all the major sites of the city. We started out near the Convention Center, where we saw the 2010 Olympic flame and great views of the bay. We saw seaplanes taking off and landing and beautiful vistas of the city skyline and Stanley Park. We then went to Stanley park where Mike’s knowledge of forestry gave us a very interesting background on the trees of the area and how logging has impacted the ecosystem. We also learned a lot about how Stanley Park came to be and the original inhabitants, the native Indians that occupied this ares originally. We visited the Shaunessy Heights area, Yale Town, Gas Town, Granville Public Market and China Town. It was great! At the end, Mike stopped at La Casa Gelato, where they have 258 flavors that are all made on premises. Fantastic. He was a fountain of knowledge on where to get great meals, great deals on shopping and places to have fun!
